2015 Early Read Expert Series Workshops

 

BUILDING BLOCKS FOR SUCCESSFUL MATHEMATICAL THINKING FROM THE EARLY YEARS BY MS PEGGY ZEE (JUL 2015)

The 2015 Early Read Expert Series organised by ECDA and NLB kick-started with a workshop on numeracy by Ms Peggy Zee.

Ms Peggy Zee conducted an Expert Series Workshop to parents on 11 July 2015 at Woodlands Regional Library. Titled "Building Blocks for Successful Mathematical Thinking from Early Years", the workshop focused on providing parents with strategies on how to develop young children's numeracy skills! This workshop saw a full house that Saturday and parents went home with new numeracy tips to try out with their children.

NURTURING EARLY LITERACY BY MS PATRICIA KOH (AUG 2015)

In the second workshop of the Early Read Expert Series, Ms Patricia Koh conducted a workshop on Nurturing Early Literacy in Little Ones. Held on 15 August at the Bishan Public Library, many of the parents were taken in by the engaging session and the variety of books for children. The workshop focused on providing parents with simple ways to create a print-rich environment with lots of language experiences! Like the first workshop, it saw a full house that Saturday and parents went home armed with books and tips to make their child's early literacy experiences meaningful.

OPTIMISING YOUR INFANT AND TODDLER'S BRAIN AND HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT BY MS PUSPA SIVAN (SEP 2015)

September was an information-packed month as we conducted two Expert Series workshops back-to-back! In the third installment of the Early Read Expert Series, Ms Puspa Sivan spoke about optimising infant's and toddler's brain and holistic development. Held on 12 September at the Jurong Regional Library, Ms Puspa's years of experience working with young children and passion for nurturing them clearly shone through. She delivered an engaging session peppered with many practical strategies and stories. The workshop gave parents an understanding of the early years, the behaviours of infants and toddlers, as well as the importance of emotional stability and secure attachments for a child to learn and develop. Parents were equipped with tips on how to be responsive caregivers and learnt ways to build up their little ones!

HOW DOES YOUR CHILD LEARN TO HEAR AND TALK? (SEP 2015)

Curious about supporting your child's speech and language development? On 19 September, Ms Naomi Wong, Senior Speech and Language Therapist at the ENT- Head and Neck Surgery Centre at the National University Hospital, conducted the fourth Expert Series talk on this topic. In her talk, Ms Naomi shared the differences between speech and language and the language developmental milestones that the children in different age groups can attain. She also provided activities that parents can do with their child to develop their language abilities.

RARING TO GO - PREPARING YOUR CHILD FOR P1 (OCT 2015)

Conducted by Ms Chiam Lee Meng (Principal) and Mrs Selva (LH/EL) of Woodlands Ring Primary School on 10 October, the workshop shared with parents how they can support their child as they transit into Primary 1. In this fully subscribed workshop, parents were grouped together in this engaging session and introduced to the latest programmes and curriculum of the primary school education system. Parents were introduced to a set of educational materials used in primary schools for supporting children's learning. Ms Chiam even dished out practical advice on how parents can prepare themselves for this new phase in their child's life.

RAISING MEDIA-WISE CHILDREN IN THE DIGITAL AGE (NOV 2015)

Ms Carol Loi from the Media and Development Authority (MDA) shared with parent useful advice and practical strategies on how children's media literacy and cyber wellness. Parents brought back ideas on healthy habits they should inculcate in their children when using various forms of media and tips on how to access online websites and games that their children are exposed to.

SUPPORTING CHILDREN WITH LEARNING DIFFICULTIES (DEC 2015)

Conducted by Ms Lim Chun Yi, Senior Occupational Therapist at KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH), the workshop addressed parents' concerns on supporting children with learning disabilities. Ms Lim shared different ways to identify children who are at risk of learning difficulties, and also the different strategies to provide a supportive environment for children with learning differences.
