15 January 2015 - Common Cents (Channel 5), Singapore
In this episode of Common Cents, mummy blogger, Irene Soh, shares the difficulties she faced when looking for a child care centre for her 2-year old son, James. The three main difficulties are:
Accessibility - Placed on long waiting lists from child care centres that are near her home
Affordability - Unable to afford expensive child care fees of private and commercial child care centres as her family is a single-income family
Quality - Identifying a quality child care centre that can support James' special needs.
Irene was introduced to 3 early childhood experts who provided her with advice on selecting a good child care centre.
Ms Phyllis Tan (MY World) shared about ECDA's Anchor Operators Scheme (AOP scheme) and plans to build more child care centres in areas of high demand, as well as the SPARK Quality Certification. She also shared about the factors affecting the cost of a child care centre and why parents should visit the child care premise when selecting a centre for their child.
Ms Charmaine Soh (President, Association of Chinese Montessori International) spoke about the Montessori approach and encouraged all parents to do the necessary research on how they can support their child's development.
Ms Irene Lim (Principal, MY World@Boon Keng) introduced the child care subsidies available to parents with different levels of household income and explained how parents can calculate the amount of subsidy available to them.
