You may have noticed the SPARK logo when visiting preschools or researching options for your child. But what does it mean and how does it affect your child's preschool experience?
1
WHAT EXACTLY IS SPARK?
SPARK stands for the Singapore Preschool Accreditation Framework. It is a quality framework that helps preschools continually improve what they do.
But for parents, the important thing isn't the acronym. It's what sits behind it: preschools’ commitment to keep improving the experiences they provide for your child, as they learn, grow and develop.
In short: SPARK helps preschools reflect on and improve their practices how they can better support children and families.
2
WHAT DOES A SPARK-ACCREDITED PRESCHOOL LOOK LIKE IN PRACTICE?
You may not see a sign that says "SPARK in Action", but you'll notice it in your child's daily experience.
You would observe children learning in a nurturing and inclusive environment. You would find that every child has opportunities to explore, play, ask questions, interact with peers and develop new skills through meaningful experiences planned and facilitated by their teachers.
You'll also see a focus on the whole child, including their social, emotional, physical and communication skills.
In short: Your child is supported across key areas of learning and development, including language, numeracy and thinking skills, physical development, creativity, and social-emotional development.
3
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM MY CHILD'S EDUCATORS?
Good preschool teaching goes beyond classroom activities.
Educators observe children closely, understand their strengths and needs, and adapt learning experiences accordingly. They also make the most of everyday moments, such as mealtimes, transitions and conversations, as opportunities for learning.
Just as importantly, educators regularly reflect on their practices and look for ways to improve the learning experiences and partner parents to support the children’s development.
In short: Educators keep learning and improving their practices, so they can better support your child.

4
HOW ARE PARENTS INVOLVED?
Parents and educators each see different sides of a child.
You know your child's personality, interests and behaviours at home, while educators see how your child learns, plays and interacts with others in preschool. When both perspectives come together, children benefit.
That's why partnership between parents and preschools is central to SPARK, with parents kept informed and given meaningful opportunities to be involved in their child’s learning.
In short: You are your child’s first teacher and play an important part in partnering your child's teacher in his/her learning and development.
5
WILL SPARK HELP PREPARE MY CHILD FOR PRIMARY ONE?
Yes, but perhaps not in the way some parents expect.
Preparing for Primary One isn't about giving children worksheets earlier or rushing academic skills before they are ready. It's about helping them build confidence, independence, social skills and positive learning habits.
These are the foundations that support a smooth transition to primary school.
In short: SPARK supports school readiness by helping children develop the foundational skills and positive learning habits they need for their next stage of learning.
6
ONCE A PRESCHOOL IS SPARK-ACCREDITED, DOES THAT MEAN THE WORK IS DONE?
Not at all.
SPARK accreditation isn't a finish line. Each preschool is expected to regularly review its practices, identify areas for improvement and continue strengthening its curriculum and programmes.
This ongoing process helps ensure that children continue to benefit from quality learning experiences over time.
In short: Accreditation is about continuous quality improvement, not a one-time achievement.

SPARK accreditation does not tell you everything about a preschool, but it can give you confidence that the preschool is committed to providing quality learning experiences and continually improving for the benefit of children.
As you explore preschool options, look beyond facilities and programmes. Ask how educators support children's development, how families are involved, and how the preschool helps every child learn and grow. These are the qualities that SPARK seeks to encourage and strengthen.
